Juan Miguel Quiñones, born in Cádiz in 1979, is a self-taught artist. His approach, following the influence of Claes Oldenburg, lies in the representation of everyday objects as symbols of our times, stripping them of their usual functions and connotations, always infusing them with the sense of humour that characterises him. Format, materials and the transformation of matter are intrinsic aspects of his style.
After exploring multiple styles and techniques of stone sculpture, the artist has transcended the Florentine Renaissance technique known as piedra dura, which consists of inlaying semi-precious stones into marble. In keeping with this methodology, Quiñones reinterprets stonemasonry with a contemporary approach.
The play of colours brings the work closer to reality. Ice cream, bodyboards and surfing fins emerge from the stone to convey an irony that reminds him of his childhood, when his mother advised him and his three brothers: "don't play with food". Today, through satire, Quiñones once again interacts with these elements: food, play and stone.
This exhibition, entitled "Cuando Calienta el Sol", brings together Quiñones' most recent work, in which he nostalgically evokes the summer, immersing himself in the memory of those endearing objects that make up the personal and collective imaginary.
