WITCHES
THERE IS NO FIRST WITHOUT SECOND

This series stems from a visit to the ruins of El Brujo temple of the Moche Culture (400 AD) in northern Peru, in the department of La Libertad. In this ruin lies the tomb and remains of the Lady of Cao, ruler, healer, and perhaps the most powerful woman of the Early Intermediate Period. WITCHES establishes a new narrative to forge connections with the matriarchal structure of pre-Hispanic Peru. A new mythology of the collective unconscious about ancient northern Peru. Presenting itself as a funerary scene of the ancient Moche alongside ceramic ornaments created by the artist. These objects follow a series of archetypes of the Witch myth, such as independent, isolated women condemned for their powers, seductive of freedom and temptation. The work is activated by the artist along with a performance of invocation to the initiation of the women of the earth. It invites us to rethink the imagery of the role and empowerment of women in history and today.

This series was exhibited at Espacio Paiján, Trujillo, La Libertad, Peru in 2018 and at Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Lima, Peru in 2019.
